Hello, I’m Alexia Samoilova, founder of Moissanite Ukraine. Today, I’d like to share the story of a little dream that grew into my life’s work.
I’ve always been deeply concerned about protecting nature. Environmental issues and the responsible use of natural resources have become an essential part of my values. That’s why I admire companies that embrace environmentally conscious production methods and strive to minimize their impact on the planet.
This is how my passion for handmade creations began. They are authentic, environmentally conscious, and full of soul. I deeply admire talented Ukrainian artisans and draw inspiration from their craftsmanship. After all, creations made by human hands are among the most precious forms of art.
A few years ago, I came across a quote: “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” If I’m not mistaken, these words belong to Theodore Roosevelt. They resonated with me, although I didn’t fully understand their deeper meaning at the time. That understanding came much later, through my personal values and life experiences.
How Our Story Began
The story of Moissanite Ukraine began long before the company was founded. It was 2017, and I didn’t even know moissanite existed. Yet deep down, I hoped that somewhere in the world there was a beautiful gemstone that could bring joy without harming our planet.
I remember looking for new jewelry for a special occasion. I spent hours visiting jewelry stores, where expensive diamonds, fiery rubies, and dazzling emeralds sparkled in the display cases. But nothing felt right. None of it was what I was looking for.
I wanted an alternative gemstone, one that wasn’t extracted from the depths of the Earth like traditional natural gemstones. I was searching for jewelry that reflected my principles and my relationship with the world around me. Yet I couldn’t find anything that was both beautiful and environmentally responsible. So I continued searching and discovered that modern technology had taken laboratory gemstone creation to an entirely new level. This process offered an alternative to traditional mining, without the same environmental disruption or reliance on inexpensive labor often associated with mining operations.
As I explored the subject more deeply, I came across information on an international website about a remarkable gemstone called moissanite.
Until that moment, I hadn’t known exactly what I was searching for. But when I saw photographs and read about this gemstone, everything suddenly became clear. It felt as though I had been searching for it my entire life. I fell in love with its appearance and extraordinary characteristics. It was love at first sight. Moissanite embodied everything I had dreamed of in a gemstone, perfectly reflecting my environmental values and personal philosophy.
Moissanite: A Gift from Space to Our Planet
Moissanite is a mineral associated with outer space and is exceptionally rare in nature on Earth. It was discovered in 1893 during the examination of a fallen meteorite, when scientists identified tiny particles of an unknown mineral.
It took almost a century to develop the technology needed to grow moissanite in laboratory conditions. And only about fifteen years ago, the first large crystal suitable for cutting into a gemstone appeared.
After discovering this fascinating story, I wanted to buy moissanite jewelry. But that turned out to be surprisingly difficult.
There wasn’t a single mention of this gemstone on Ukrainian websites.
None of the jewelry sellers I contacted had ever heard of it. There wasn’t even any reference information about moissanite available in Ukrainian.
Then an idea struck me like lightning.
Moissanite simply had to become available in Ukraine. People who shared my values deserved to know about this environmentally conscious, conflict-free alternative and have the opportunity to buy it.
That’s when a beautiful idea began to take shape: to build my life’s work around my environmental principles and love for handmade craftsmanship.
I knew how talented Ukrainian jewelers were! Yet independent artisans often struggled to compete with large jewelry companies, where production processes were increasingly mechanized and performed by machines.
As this idea grew in my mind, I felt as though I could fly.
And that feeling has never left me.
Moissanite Ukraine is much more than a business. It is my life’s work, an expression of my values, philosophy, and dreams. They live on in every gemstone and every piece of jewelry we create.
It gives me wings to see more and more people embracing the idea of choosing beautiful gemstones that are kinder to our planet.
It inspires me to know that I can give talented jewelers opportunities to express their creativity.
And it fills me with hope to help revive appreciation for traditional handmade craftsmanship in Ukraine.
Today, when I look back at everything I’ve accomplished, I feel the same joy I experienced the very first time I discovered moissanite.
I continue to introduce people to this extraordinary gemstone, develop a culture of appreciation for its beauty, and share its unique qualities. And now, at last, I truly understand the meaning of Roosevelt’s words.
Humanity takes so much from our planet: clean air and oceans, forests cleared to make way for shopping centers, and animals exploited for entertainment. Entire ecosystems can be destroyed to extract just a few handfuls of diamonds.
We live in the 21st century. These outdated practices should no longer have a place in our modern world.
I understand that I cannot change the future of our entire planet on my own. But I can live according to my values and remain true to myself.
Finally, I am doing what I can, with what I have, where I am.
