What is moissanite, and how is it different from a diamond?

What is Moissanite?

Moissanite is a rare mineral that occurs naturally on Earth only in extremely small quantities and exclusively at meteorite impact sites. It first attracted scientific attention about a hundred years ago, when the scientist Henri Moissan was studying a meteorite in South America.

It was in the fragments of this meteorite that moissanite was first discovered, or more precisely, its tiny particles. The gemstone was named after its discoverer, who drew the scientific community’s attention to these cosmic crystals in the early 20th century. Henri Moissan announced that these were not merely meteorite fragments but an entirely new type of precious gemstone! The scientist was awarded the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the mineral.

Despite their visual similarities, diamonds and moissanites differ in their chemical composition:

  • Diamond consists entirely of carbon atoms (C), while moissanite forms through the combination of silicon and carbon (Si + C).
  • Diamond burns completely at 800°C, while the melting point of moissanite is 2,400°C.

For the atoms of these two nonmetals to arrange themselves into an orderly crystal lattice, extremely high temperatures and pressures are required, conditions that are physically impossible on our planet.

Therefore, moissanite forms in abundance only in regions of intense energy release, where large-scale cosmic catastrophes occur.

The Most Brilliant Gemstone in the World

In its pure natural form, this meteorite gemstone is so rare that only a few handfuls of natural moissanite exist on Earth. Nevertheless, the gemstone proved to be so attractive, spectacular, and superior to diamonds in certain characteristics that the first synthetic moissanite was created in the 20th century.

Research into the optical properties of moissanite crystals revealed astonishing results:

  • Moissanite has a refractive index approximately 25% higher than that of diamond.
  • Its dispersion (the ability to produce colorful flashes of light within the gemstone) is two and a half times greater than that of diamond!
  • This gemstone sparkles more intensely and vividly than even perfectly cut diamonds.

The main reason moissanite remains relatively unfamiliar is that most precious gemstones, including sapphires, emeralds, and diamonds, have been known to humanity for centuries, while the first synthetic moissanite was created only toward the end of the 20th century.

Dispersion Refractive Index Brilliance Mohs Hardness Density
Moissanite 0.104 2.65-2.69 20.4% 9.25-9.5 3.21
Diamond 0.044 2.42 17.2% 10 3.52

Environmentally Friendly and Conflict-Free

Moissanite is a friend of nature, and this is one of its greatest advantages. Growing moissanite does not require the destruction of the Earth’s natural resources or extensive mining operations. Its production is environmentally friendly and respectful of nature!

We are accustomed to thinking that diamonds are the most beautiful precious gemstones. You may be surprised to discover that moissanite is actually the most beautiful and brilliant gemstone in the world. Its brightness, brilliance, and sparkle surpass those of diamonds several times over. Although relatively new to the jewelry industry, moissanite has experienced remarkable demand in the United States and Europe, quickly becoming a major jewelry trend.

Gemstone enthusiasts have embraced moissanite with great admiration and affection, considering it a crowning achievement among precious gemstones. It has earned a place in jewelry lovers’ collections thanks to its captivating beauty and remarkable characteristics.
Moissanite refracts light so intensely that its dispersion is almost two and a half times greater than that of any diamond.

Its hardness is comparable to that of diamond, placing it among the hardest gemstones.
These exceptional qualities have helped this cosmic gemstone rapidly capture the attention of the entire jewelry world. If you’re looking to buy high-quality gold jewelry featuring moissanites, our online store is here to help.
